There are several reasons a person may decide to journal, that likely has its roots in what the purpose of their journaling is for.
As an integrative coach, with heavy emphasis on energy awareness, I've often encouraged clients to journal their experiences. The number 1 reason for this is due to memory. Our memory of past events isn't as detailed as we'd like it to be. As a matter of fact, forensic hypnosis (hypnosis used in criminal cases) isn't even admissible in court. The reason for this is due to what is called "false memory." Over time, our memory tends to distort the actual events. It's also the reason why hypnotherapists don't really focus on whether a remembered event is factual or not, they simply work with what is presented, trusting that the deeper part of the client is presenting whatever needs to be transformed, at that moment.
Therefore, journaling really presents us with the opportunity to more clearly recall events, feelings, challenges, dreams, and experiences overall -- assuming we are journaling the experience just after it occurred. And for an empathic or highly sensitive person, this can really make a huge difference in keeping track of their daily experiences.
When you're empathic or sensitive, the experiences of awareness are daily, and journaling can not only help to make sense of the experiences, but also help you to avoid uncomfortable experiences as well.
For the beginner, journaling helps you to connect the dots, so to speak, as well as increase your awareness of subtle energetic experiences.
For the person who has been taught Transformative Dreamwork, it helps you to recognize what worked, and be able to apply it again in the future.
When it comes to energetic and intuitive awareness, it also helps you to recognize patterns. For example, you may have an experience of intuitive awareness because someone was thinking of you. However, in the moment it happens, you have no proof of that. You simply have what you were experiencing. Over the next day or so, the person thinking about you may then contact you in some way. Therefore, it may take a few days or more to connect those 2 dots. If you had journaled the experience, you could then go back and make a note next to that initial entry. Then when you have a similar future experience, you'll have something to reference.

It's my way of encouraging seasoned clients to journal their dreams, exactly what they did to transform it, and what manifested from their actions. Again, this will help with future reference. It can also help to give insight into what is occurring during waking hours.

First, let me clarify what I mean by silence, and a noisy world.
When I speak (okay, write) about silence, I’m speaking about inner silence, when that incessant internal dialogue (although, it’s often more like a monologue) finally stops, or lessens enough that we can be more fully present. That internal dialogue is also a part of what I call “noise.” The other aspect of the “noise,” is the never-ending incoming information and/or continuous communication that is so rampant today.
Whether it’s internal dialogue, or continually being conjoined with your cellphone, it all requires mental activity. Whether you’re reading, listening, viewing, or conversing (audibly or by text/email), it’s all mental activity that perpetuates our internal noise. When we add having internal dialogues with people that aren’t even there, because we’re thinking about them, it just continues to add to our inner noise.
Given how technology is completely changing our way of life, it’s actually not surprising. However, there are aspects to having that continual noise that is not so beneficial.
Here are 3 reasons why re-establishing more inner silence can benefit you:
1. Mental activity requires energy. I actually wrote about this in one of my earlier blog posts titled “The #1 Way We Lose Energy.” The more energy you use mentally, the less energy you have for other things.
2. Excessive mental activity stresses our body. Robert Sapolsky, who studied the stress response for 30 years, was quoted as having said, “For humans, we turn on the stress response for purely “psychological states,” thinking about things. And so we’re doing it for non-physiological reasons, and we’re doing it non-stop.” Therefore, not only does less mental activity reduce the inner noise, it also helps your body to relax. Relaxation is key to helping the body move out of the stress response and back to taking care of itself instead.
3. If our attention is elsewhere, we can’t be fully present and fully engaged in the moment.
